A Voyage of Passion in Pictures

I can't say how many times I've leafed through the pages of "LULU", Lulu's inspirational and voyeuristic book of hand-painted collages. Every time I open its pages, it feels so fresh, so new, like I'm looking at it for the first time all over again.

"LULU" was recently released by Ammo Books and has been generating a lot of enthusiasm and praise for good reason. Met Home said it best: this book is "so enormously colorful and energetic, so totally larger than life, that we give it the joie de vivre award for sheer affirmative exhuberance." The pages are overflowing with color; the handscribbles and torn-out photos placed side-by-side with lushly painted florals are mesmerizing and life-affirming both at the same time.

Lulu's book is truly her trail of inspiration: a visual autobiography which takes as its subject her family memories growing up, her world travels, and her life's great romance and inspirations. Here are a few of the images -

The oversized coffee table format of this book is perfect for showing off the collages at their best, or for tearing out and pinning to your wall (as every person I show the book to wants to do). Leafing through these pages is like taking a journey through Lulu's eyes and musings, and is an invigorating journey from start to finish.

My Biggest Inspiration

My mother will always be my biggest inspiration. She had effortless style and beauty. She never wore makeup-she never had to. She exhaled elegance, grace, style, generosity and love into everything and everyone in her path. My mother/ my best friend passed away this Christmas Eve. I hope she found my father up in Heaven...or Paris, or wherever they may be. May they rest in peace.

Hand-Painted Fabric Preview

Here is another fabric design that we are about to bring out... I am living in Los Angeles right now and the sun sets right in front of our house. The light seems to glow onto all the trees, plants, flowers and houses...as if it were blessing them all good night. This design was the inspiration from that.

Another Day at The Office

People are always surprised to learn that I hand paint all my work...fabrics, wallpapers, bedlinens, rugs, collages for my book etc. I NEVER use the computer to create anything. I paint most of my florals onto canvas drop cloth (the type house painters use to protect the floors and furniture from paint drips). And make most of my geometric designs from cut out paper. This image is of me working on my kitchen floor in my NY apartment. I happen to be working on my book "LULU" in this image.

My Newest Hand-Painted Fabrics

This is my latest painting that I am working on for our next LULU DK fabric. Unbeknownst to most, I hand paint all my designs onto painters drop cloth canvas. It tends to absorb the paint well making it easy to navigate and create fine lines. I use water based paints and often mix in coffee to get a nice rich mocha color. We are also going to make this print into a matching wallpaper on a linen ground (a first for us!). We are so excited.
